How To Fix Noisy Disc Brakes On A Mountain Bike

Instead of dealing with the squealing and squeaking follow along on this mountain bike repair guide that’ll silence those noisy brakes for good!

Before you start, try and figure out what caused the problem in the first place. Brakes often squeak naturally in damp conditions, but if they are squeaking all the time, it’s likely that they are contaminated with oil. Check to make sure your brake lines aren’t leaking hydraulic fluid, or that you aren’t lubricating your brakes with chain lube accidentally from overspray. Remember, the discs are super sensitive to all oils so no touching with dirty fingers!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Isopropyl alcohol

  • Coarse grit sandpaper

  • A propane torch

  • Allen keys

  • Blue shop towels

  • Repair stand (optional!)

The Steps:

  1. Remove wheels

  2. Clean rotors with alcohol and towels

  3. Lightly burn rotors with a propane torch

  4. Let cool!

  5. Remove brake pads

  6. Lightly sand pads

  7. Re-install everything

  8. Bed-in pads

  9. Shred til' yer dead!
